🇬🇧 One of the lines that put the city moving...
The Alfândega branch was created in November 1888 due to the city's need to have a more efficient and faster way of taking goods unloaded at the Invicta's Customs to other parts of the country, without having to use trucks. This small railway connected Pinheiro station (in the CampanhĂŁ area) and the aforementioned "Alfândega do Porto". It was only 3.8 km long, was used only by freight trains and had some works of art along its route, including: 2 bridges over Freixo and China streets and 3 tunnels of different sizes. The first tunnel was about 80 meters long, starting just before a well-known school in the city and ending just under the D. Maria Pia Bridge. The second tunnel was the shortest, measuring just 23 meters and "protected" the line as it passed through FontaĂnhas. The third and last was the longest, measuring 1.3km in length, around 30% of the length of the entire line, and connected the FontaĂnhas area to Ribeira. Initially the small branch had a single track, but in order to ease railway traffic in CampanhĂŁ in 1889, a second track was built in some locations.
Despite the current car park having been its eternal terminal, it was discussed when the Port of Leixões opened, the extension of the line to this location, something that never happened as this seaport was served by the Leixões Line (and previously by the Matosinhos branch). It was also thanks to Leixões that customs began to have its days numbered. The branch closed in June 1989, almost 101 years after its opening, and has been abandoned since then.
In the 21st century, the branch once again became a topic of conversation, right in 2005, as the group "GARRA - Action Group for the Rehabilitation of the Customs Branch" wanted to rehabilitate it, immediately proposing several alternatives for this purpose, among them, the extension of the passenger rail service from the Leixões line to Alfândega, thus creating a direct connection between Leça do Balio and Porto's riverside via SĂŁo Mamede, Contumil and CampanhĂŁ. More recently, in mid-2020, the Porto City Council decided to evaluate the state of the branch and the possibility of rehabilitation based on 2 proposals: the creation of a tram/light metro line with a station in FontaĂnhas or a new pedestrian route/cycling area and the installation of an urban park along this slope. Due to the scale of the railway option, the coexistence of the two options is not possible. In 2023, STCP Serviços delivered a report demonstrating the viability of both options, recommending however not the creation of the stop in FontaĂnhas. If any of these projects were carried out, it would take around 3/4 years for us to see the Customs branch full of life again.
