Geocache Description:

10 December 2023, 14:15 - 15:15

21 years of GEOCKY!

A simple meet and greet celebration at a familiar but new coffee & pastry location in Lexington.

Once again it is time for us to come together to celebrate another year of GEOCKY. We know that everyone is busy during the holiday season, so this will be a mid-afternoon event.  There is an outdoor area, weather permitting.

Please attend even if you have never been to an event or participated in GEOCKY before - everyone is welcome. This is a great place to start and to meet the other locals in the geocaching community.

This will be an informal gathering fitting of our informal group. Come as you are. Kids and pets (outdoors only) are welcome here. This is a great time to meet with area cachers to discuss caches, excursions, and whatever else you would like to discuss.

A tradition of the GEOCKY birthday event is that the local cachers hide "presents" (new caches) to be published on or around the day of the event, for some before- and after-event geocaching fun. This is more than an event to GEOCKY; it is a get-together to do the things we love doing. To be clear, placing "presents" is NOT required to attend the event. If you do place "presents", please post a note to the event page, so everyone can be ready for fun outside of the event.

NOTE - As our history rolls on, it is becoming more tedious to document and more longwinded for anyone to read on the cache page. In response this will shorter synopisis of the group through the years. If you are interested in where we have come from, please see our FB group and this bookmark list of past birthday events.

The first cache placed in Lexington was in November 2001 and a group of geocachers came together a year later in December 2002 to connect with one another and to address problems with land managers that threatened geocaching in this area. This meeting resulted in the formation of the second olderst geocaching organization the the world.

As geocaching was in its infancy, the early years of GEOCKY were more about service than social efforts. The social events were certainly present but the community remained small for a number of years as many of those from the early days moved out of the area or moved on to other interests.

As geocaching has matured and more people entered the hobby, social outings became more of the focal point of local events. Hiking, biking, paddling, games, flash mobs, dinners, picnics, desserts, coffee, and drinks have been part of the events in recent years. Service opportunities are still an important part of the group's activities.
