Geocache Description:

HR...

ENG...

The construction of the Vukovar water tower began in 1962, and it started working as a water reservoir at the beginning of 1968.

It was built as a replacement for the previous water tower in the center of the city (next to the Dunav Hotel, on today's Trg Republike Hrvatska), which was not of sufficient capacity for the increasing needs of the expanding city.

The water tower, a state project, was designed as a water supply regulator for the areas of Borovo, Vukovar and Vinkovci. The studies and projects were entrusted to a group of experts from Zagreb's "Hydro Project", headed by Aleksandar Rose, a native of Vukovar. Matej Meštrić was also in the group, whose conceptual solution won.

The designers of the water tower are architects Petar Kušan and Sergej Kolobov, according to Alexander Rose's project idea of building a water supply network.[1]

It is 50 meters high, had a water tank with a capacity of 2,200 m3 on top, its total mass with a full tank is 9,000 tons, and the foundations are 21 m in diameter, built on loess deposits, weighing 3,000 tons. The work was carried out by the Zagreb company "Hidrotehna".

Purified Danube water reaches the water tower from the treatment plant in Borovo naselje. High-pressure pumps push water four kilometers 300 liters per second. [2]

It was built in what was then the city park and the so-called picnic area. "Najpar-bašči", at the entrance to the Vukovar urban settlement Mitnica.[3][4]

At the time of construction, with a reservoir capacity of 2,200 cubic meters, it was among the largest buildings of its kind in Europe.[5] At the top there was a restaurant-observatory, the cafe "Vodotoranj", from which you could see Vukovar, the Danube and the surrounding area. The restaurant was closed in 1970, after which the accounting office of the Waterworks was located in the tower.
