Soon after, Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and William Penn left their country or their colony seeking the same thing in the Americas in the colonies of Rhode Island and Pennsylvania, establishing a strong tradition of religious freedom in several of the 13 English Colonies. Later, this concept enshrined in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.
With many early Quaker settlers, South Jersey shared in this early colonial vision of religious freedom. Today, New Jersey is one of the most culturally and religiously diverse states in the country
