This creepy little tune was the top song of 1983 in the United States and earned The Police a Grammy for song of the year. Oddly, this tune was a popular one at weddings in the 1980s (!) It was the signature song of The Police and continues to pay handsome royalties to its owner, Sting.
But this was far from a love song and was inspired by a broken relationship that Sting was enduring at the time. He said this about the song: "I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control."
