Yukon is one of Westmoreland County’s many small communities, and while I can’t find much information about the community, here are a few interesting things I was able to dig up.
- Yukon is considered a census-designated place. Census-designated places are geographical areas designated by the U.S. Census Bureau for the purposes of compiling demographic data.
- In 2010, the US Census reported Yukon’s population at 677. Ten years later in 2020, the population dropped to 543 – nearly a 20 percent decline. The population declined again between 2020 and 2021, all the way down to 481.
- Yukon is home to the former Magee Mine site, which has been defunct since the 1950s. It was built in 1908 and, at its peak, employed nearly 500 people and produced 429,000 tons of coal. Old news accounts report that a 20-minute gunfight resulting in several injuries and deaths occurred between striking miners and guardsmen at the site back in 1910. - There is an old, abandoned schoolhouse in the center of town. It’s worth driving by to check it out, but I couldn’t find any information on its history.
- Yukon has their own post office and Volunteer Fire Company. In fact, the Volunteer Fire Company celebrated its 100-year anniversary in June 2023.
Yukon also has a very nice park (Yukon Lions Park) that features ballfields, a walking loop, and a kayak & canoe launch onto Sewickley Creek. This cache is hidden on the outskirts of the park. Please search respectfully and place the cache as you found it.
