The Winter Solstice, or the December Solstice, is the point at which the path of the sun in the sky is farthest south. At the Winter Solstice, the sun travels the shortest path through the sky resulting in the day of the year with the least sunlight and therefore, the longest night. In the lead-up to the Winter Solstice, the days become shorter and shorter, then on the evening of the solstice  —  in the Northern Hemisphere occurs annually on the 21st or 22nd of December —  winter begins  The December solstice (winter solstice) in Detroit is at 10:27 pm on Thursday, December 21, 2023. In terms of daylight, this day is 6 hours, 12 minutes shorter than the June solstice.

On December 21, 2023, the Southern Hemisphere will tilt toward the Sun more than any other day of the year. This will allow those south of the equator to experience the maximum intensity of the Sun’s rays. At the same time, the Northern Hemisphere will tilt away from the Sun more than any other day of the year.

Geocaching HQ created a souvenir for geocachers to celebrate the December solstice. To earn this souvenir, geocachers must find a total of 12 geocaches, Event Caches, and/or Adventure Lab® Locations between December 17–23, 2023. We chose 12 because December is the 12th month of the year.
