The Loess Hills are a national treasure and the northern portion of the Hills is home to Broken Kettle Grasslands. Broken Kettle is a sweeping reminder of nature’s beauty. The rugged hills are a very unique geological formation.The 4000-acre Broken Kettle Grasslands is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. Broken Kettle is steep and rugged in places and is mostly grasslands. Visitors to the Broken Kettle Grasslands may see many plants and animals that are more at home further to the west. This includes rare butterflies, grassland birds and prairie vegetation. In addition, bison were re-introduced to Broken Kettle in October of 2008, the first time in 150 years bison have roamed this Iowa prairie.
