Geocache Description:

This series of six caches has been set out on our local nature reserve, with kind permission from the Watchtree Nature Reserve.  The series can be completed as a circular route, not necessarily in number order.  It can be walked or cycled and the route is both wheelchair and buggy accessible.  The ground is level and the route is roughly two miles in length.  Full details are on the Watchtree Wander 1 page.

Dogs MUST be kept on a lead at all times.

N.B.  Only cache#1 is accessible out of opening hours as the gates to the reserve are kept locked between 16.45 and 09.00.

The six turbines comprising the Great Orton wind farm (three of which are located on Watchtree Nature Reserve) replaced ten smaller turbines in 1999. This “re-powering” increased the maximum generating capacity of the wind farm from 3 to 4 MW but, to achieve this output, all six turbines must be operational, and the wind must be blowing at between 30 and 55 mph.  For these reasons, the average output over the eight years from 2003 to 2010 was less than 1 MW (22% of the maximum capacity). These turbines are 45m high to the hub with a maximum height of 68.5m to the tip of the blades.
