Geocache Description:

06 January 2024, 09:30 - 10:30

Cache In Trash Out (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 363,000 people have volunteered at 18,000 CITO events.

An opportunity to clean-up beach litter in the area, so come along and give back to the environment and community.

Fort Bribie

Fort Bribie became operational by early 1942, it was built at the outbreak of WWII, to provide defense support for the RAN against light-raiding warships. Originally the fort was a fairly primitive construct, but as Japanese aggression intensified the bunker’s superior tactical position prompted it to be upgraded into Moreton Bay’s major defense installation.

Access

There may be two opportunities to arrive at this CITO: From the south by 4WD (accessed either from White Patch, or Woorim), or by kayak/boat from the west/north, which may also involve a long walk.

Woorim Beach on the eastern side of Bribie Island offers access to long white sandy stretches for four-wheel driving. A high clearance capable 4WD vehicle is required to travel on these beaches. Low tide is at 11:34 hr (0.83 m), while high tide on either side is at 05:34 hr (1.49 m) and 17:00 hr (1.33 m), so travel along the beach may be ok (rather than using the inland 4WD track).

Should you access by 4WD, then a  vehicle access permit must be obtained before driving on Bribie Island, and that can be booked by Queensland Government Parks and Forests. As of the time of event submission, permit costs are either:

  • 1 week or less = $55.50; or
  • more than 1 week (up to 1 year) = $173.30.

Alternatively and as previously mentioned, you may choose to boat/kayak across Pumisctone Passage and walk/ride across to the CITO event location.

Litter State

The beaches have attracted significantly increased tourism in the last five years, and as a result, litter has accumulated along the beaches:

Its hard to believe these days how busy Bribie has become in the last decade or so. With the increase in visitors, unfortunately, has seen an increase in rubbish and litter throughout our pristine waterways and beaches. And what’s even harder to believe is the absolute grubs out there that throw litter, dump litter and seem to have no respect for the environment or its creatures. On nearly every occasion either up the passage, over at Moreton or up the Bribie surf beach we will see and pick up sometimes bags of rubbish and glass.

  • A safety briefing will be conducted at the Posted Coordinates at 09:30 hr on conditions, emergency procedures, and responsibilities;
