Geocache Description:

ANTGAS PIAS DO POÇO DA FAIA

PORTUGUES   (FOR ENGLISH SCROLL DOWN)

OLD BASINS OF THE WELL OF THE FAIA

Pedro Miguel is located in an extensive valley of the “graben” named after this parish, between Lomba dos Frades and Lomba Grande, being crossed by the Pedro Miguel stream. According to Marcelino Lima (a historian who wrote the history of the island of Faial), the name Pedro Miguel was then due to “(...) an individual of that name who owned land there. , father-in-law of GonçalvesRodrigues (...)”, a more credible version as this name appears on a sesmaria charter, issued by the first donatario captain on January 2, 1486.

Pedro Miguel's washbasins have a history that dates back to the 19th century. The Parish of Pedro Miguel has a large expanse of streams, which originate at various points on the slope of Caldeira and which join together, forming a single stream, in the Miragaia area, from where there is still a route of around five kilometers to the sea. . It was along this last route that the population of the parish settled, due to the wells that existed along the river and provided abundant water for animals and domestic life.

Washing clothes next to the wells and carrying water to clean the house where the activities stood out the most. The Poço da Faia sinks were recently restored, so called because there is a beech tree (Morella Faya) in that location.

Discover a time when there was no piped water and it was in wells that clothes were washed, this being a feminine task that would take most of the day. In the morning the clothes were washed and put away, in the afternoon they were rinsed with clean water , the laundry was wrung out and transported in cedar baskets back home to be left to dry. However, the moments spent in the wells went beyond work, there people lived, sang and worked did all kinds of work. The wells were places for great stories. In the 1960s, water was channeled and the wells were no longer used.
