A Produção de Figurado em barro, vulgarmente conhecida como “Bonecos de Estremoz”, é uma arte com mais de três séculos e que faz parte da identidade cultural deste concelho, sendo as primeiras referências de princípios do séc.XVIII.
Em 1770, sabe-se da existência das “boniqueiras”, mulheres que faziam curiosidades e figuras de barro e que tinham um trabalho não reconhecido enquanto ofício.
Em dezembro de 2017 o artesanato de figuras de barro de Estremoz foi integrado pela UNESCO na Lista Representativa do Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade.
Os bonecos tiveram certamente início na necessidade espiritual, ou seja, o povo queria ter em casa os santinhos da sua devoção. Comprá-los em talha era impossível, dadas as dificuldades do quotidiano, pelo que, supõe-se, que uma mulher habituada a lidar com o barro se terá atrevido a modelar pela primeira vez um santinho da sua devoção particular e daqui terá nascido a tradição, numa terra onde o barro era abundante.
Actualmente estão inventariadas mais de cem figuras diferentes e todos os dias se inventam novas temáticas, sempre relacionadas com o quotidiano das gentes alentejanas, na sua vivência rural e urbana.

The production of clay figures, commonly known as “Estremoz dolls”, is an art that dates back more than three centuries and is part of the cultural identity of this municipality, with the first references dating back to the beginning of the 18th century.
In 1770, it is known about the existence of “boniqueiras”, women who made curiosities and clay figures and who had work that was not recognized as a craft.
In December 2017, the craftsmanship of clay figures from Estremoz was included by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The dolls certainly began out of spiritual need, that is, people wanted to have the saints of their devotion at home. Buying them in carvings was impossible, given the difficulties of everyday life, so it is assumed that a woman used to dealing with clay dared to model for the first time a saint of her particular devotion and from here the tradition was born, in a land where clay was abundant.
Currently, more than a hundred different figures are listed and new themes are invented every day, always related to the daily lives of the people of Alentejo, in their rural and urban experience.
