a parrot eating parroty bits

Congrats to BoxerBailey on FTF and LydiaSimmons on FTS!

If you own a parrot, you'll know that they can be fussy eaters.  The following recipe will appeal to even an odd parrot.  The ingredients are all odds and ends you will have in your kitchen or can easily pick up at the grocery store.  No matter how fussy your parrot is, they're sure to love Oddfellow's parroty bits!

Oddfellow's Parroty Bits

Ingredients:
1 cup wheat [150 grams]
1 cup whole oats [81 grams]
1 cup barley [200 grams]
1 cup brown rice [190 grams]
1/2 cup flax seeds [74 grams]
1/2 cup navy beans (cooked and cooled) [91 grams]
1/4 cup sesame seeds [36 grams]
2 cups water [473 grams]

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Grains:
Rinse the wheat, whole oats, barley, and rice thoroughly.
In a large pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
Add the rinsed wheat, whole oats, barley, and rice to the boiling water.
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the grains are cooked and the water is absorbed. This may take 15-20 minutes. Allow it to cool.

2. Cook Navy Beans:
Cook the navy beans separately according to the package instructions until they are soft. Make sure to cool them before adding to the mix.

3. Combine Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked grains and navy beans.
Add flax seeds and sesame seeds to the mix.

4. Mix Thoroughly:
Mix all the ingredients thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of seeds and grains.

5. Cool and Serve:
Allow the mixture to cool completely before serving it to your parrot.

Storage:
Store the parrot food in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.

Remember to monitor your parrot's preferences and nutritional needs. You can also add fresh fruits and vegetables to their diet for added variety and nutrients. Additionally, consult with a veterinarian to ensure the homemade food meets your parrot's specific dietary requirements.
