Bellingham station was opened on 1st July 1882. It lies on what is now called the Catford Loop.
The name Bellingham means, “the water-meadow belonging to Beora’s people”. Bellingham was the name of a medieval manor and continued inn Bellingham Farm. When the station opened it was in open land on the Nunhead and Shortlands Railway. After the First World War, Bellingham wa one of the large estates developed on the edge of built-up London to ease overcrowding and aid slum clearance. There was plenty of land available here so two-storey houses (with gardens) could be built instead of blocks of flats.A feature of the estate is the hexagonal space in the middle.
