I'm sure you will agree it is quite a pleasant and peaceful journey along the canal, and there are many spots that afford wonderful views of the mountainous scenery around the area, so long as the weather is good.
From this cache, there is a great view towards Pihanga, over the Poutu Canal. Feel free to post a picture of the view when you visit.
