The local business at the posted coordinates was originally built as a private residence in 1764 on land once owned by (then) Colonel Joseph Spencer of Connecticut who served in the French and Indian Wars. He was one of the first proprietors in this area and one of the charter grantees of the town of Campton serving as the first Town Clerk. Joseph Spencer was later promoted to Brigadier General and served in the Continental Army under General George Washington at the Siege of Boston in 1776.
