At the beginning of the path, we have to pass through a gate with an electric shepherd. The owner only asks that we close the gates behind us!
According to the story, the fortified city of Gvozdansko was built on the Zrinski estate. The settlement first appears in the sources in 1488, but the citadel is only mentioned in 1509. In 1542, King Ferdinand appointed Croatian-Slavonic-Dalmatian ban Zrinski Sigetskit, who had a silver and lead mine as well as a mint. The siege of Gvozdanskó began on October 3, 1577. Against the Turkish army of Ferhát Pasha, which had grown to 10,000 men, in the castle, under the command of Captain Damjan Doktorović, Nikola Ožegović and Andrija Stepšić, about 300 defenders, most of them miners, the permanent guard of the castle, all Croatian knights of the castle, as well as 250 serfs from the surrounding area, faced women and children. Despite scarce food and insufficient equipment, the defenders refused all calls to surrender. When finally, on the night of January 12-13, 1578, all the fires in the fortress were extinguished. During the morning attack, the Turks entered the fortress and found the defenders of the fortress frozen to death. The defenders died of starvation and cold rather than surrender their castle. Ferhád Pasha was impressed by the sight, and out of respect for the heroism of the defenders, he allowed the priests to bury the dead according to Christian rites. The Croatian armies recaptured the castle this year, but due to the cholera that broke out in the Christian army, it fell into Turkish hands again and was finally liberated only in 1635.
