According to the Urban Dictionary, the cache name is a sarcastic expression of well-being, when things are anything but well. “Rainbows and butterflies” first appears in a scornful usage in 1896. The unicorns replaced the butterflies in the 1980’s, but by the late 90’s all combinations of the three were common.
This is a 3-stage multi-cache in what might be considered the classic style – several physical stages that are placed at varying distances, often with other caches interspersed between the stages. You will find a container at each stage beginning with the posted coordinates. Each stage will have a note with coordinates that point you to the next stage, with the final container having a log sheet to sign and date.
Help for beginners: You can manually add waypoints on the geocaching app. Go to the Waypoint section of a cache, choose to add a waypoint, enter the coordinates, save, and then navigate to the waypoint. It’s a good idea to check where your new waypoint appears on the map. If it does not fall within the park, appears to be far from a trail, or seems to be too close to another cache, then double check your entry.
New York State Parks would like to extend Winter welcome to the Saratoga-Capital District geocaching community! We truly hope you enjoy it! This year, caches have been hidden at Peebles Island, Schodack Island, Grafton Lakes, Mine Kill, and Schoharie Crossings. Each cache has been placed in a winter-friendly, meant-to-be-found manner, so have some seasonal fun and get on the trails at these beautiful New York State Parks! Don’t forget to bring a pen to sign the logs!
The Parks have variable hours of operation in the winter based on the time of sunset and staff availability, so call ahead if you’re not familiar with each Park’s schedule. You can find phone numbers for each Park, along with maps and other information at www.nysparks.com.
We love feedback and we review every log, so please let us know how you liked this series when you post your finds.
