This cache is a part of a series to recognize buildings, monuments, structures, and areas in Lincoln that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, NE Historic Markers, and Local Landmarks.
The Everett Landmark District features Lincoln's most diverse collection of historic residences, along with historic Everett School (1928) at 11th & C, for which the district and surrounding neighorhood are named. The John Miller House at 1029 E (1874) and Cullen House at 905 E (ca. 1873) are among the earliest residences in the city. Albert Watkins House (920 D St.) and Outcalt-Hall House (1039 S. 11th) are outstanding examples of Queen Anne style residences. Barr Terrace (NW corner of 11th & H) and Lyman Terrace (SE corner of 11th & H) are the sole surviving row houses of Lincoln's booming 1880s. Early apartment houses such as The Lorraine (712 S. 11th), Apollo (730 S. 11th), LaBelle (740 S. 11th), and Mariposa (745 S. 12th) demonstrate the multi-family housing which flourished in the mid-1910s. The extra-wide (120') right-of-way of S. 11th Street forms the central spine of the district. This feature dates to the 1867 Original Plat of Lincoln, which designated certain wider streets to create vistas to the major sites of the plan. 11th St. led to the center of the original University of Nebraska campus and the original Nebraska Hall.
At the posted coordinates you will find an informational map identifying 10 properties that are a mix of Local Landmarks and NRHP's. (I'm lucky enough to be calling one of them home for a few years now.) Now generally caches in this series have you visit several waypoints and observe several signs or structures but I'll give you a break since this sign is a virtual tour guide of the best this historical district has to offer. Solve the puzzle and keep an eye out for muggles.
