Geocache Description:

This Grade II Listed Victorian granite drinking fountain was erected and presented to Bangor by Alderman John Evan Roberts JP, the Mayor 1895-6, 1898-9 and 1900, when he vacated the mayoral chair on the 9 November 1900.

Granite is an “igneous” rock, formed from molten magma. As the magma cools and solidifies, a type of rock called igneous rock forms containing randomly arranged interlocking crystals. Granite contains different components, such as phenocrysts, enclaves and xenoliths.

Phenocrysts these are large mineral crystals within the granite that are distinctly larger than the other crystals in the rock. These crystals develop when molten magma cools slowly causing the mineral crystals to grow to a considerable size. Phenocrysts often have a different appearance or texture compared to the rest of the rock matrix and can be easily identified visually.

Enclaves is an aggregate of minerals or rock observed inside a larger rock body. Micro-granular enclaves result from the introduction of mafic magma into the magma chamber and its subsequent cooling following incomplete mixing.

Xenoliths is a rock fragment that becomes enveloped within a larger rock as the magma rises to the surface. Xenoliths usually have different chemical compositions and textures compared to the granite.
