This virtual geocache is located in the town of Weatherly, PA. Nearby you will see the old Weatherly Train Station and the Weatherly Area Museum. First, here is some history of the nearby area.
The Weatherly Train Station:
The Weatherly Train Station was built in 1889 and was made from bricks made by the Weatherly Brick Works. It was remodeled in 1950. Passenger service to the station ended in 1961 and freight service ended in 1970. The station was abandoned until the Weatherly Borough purchased it in 1973. It was renovated and became the borough building in 1977 and housed the borough offices and the Police Station. The building was sold in 2021 to a private individual and is currently empty.
Weatherly Area Museum:
The Weatherly Area Museum is located near the train station building. There is the main building and another abandoned building on the grounds, plus some free standing displays. Other buildings on the property were knocked down years ago. The museum building is only open on Saturdays between 1 PM and 4 PM and is free. Plenty of local history inside about the town of Weatherly and the railroad. In the grassy area near the parking lot you will see an old Lehigh Valley Hopper Car (number 15661). Near one end of the Hopper Car is an old Railroad Switch Stand on display.
Although the train station is not in operation anymore, freight trains do travel through Weatherly. Most freights run thru here late at night, but if you are here on a Sunday afternoon, you have two chances to spot a Norfolk and Southern freight. A freight runs from Allentown to Hazleton and passes thru here sometime between noon and early afternoon. The freight drops cars off in Hazleton and picks up some cars to return to Allentown. It usually passes thru Weatherly sometime around mid-afternoon on the return trip. When I was here, the returning freight train passed thru Weatherly at 3:44 PM.
To claim a find for this Virtual Cache, you must do the following:
1. Walk over to the Lehigh Valley Hopper Car. (If the gate is closed, park in the stone parking area closer to the station building and walk over to the grassy area). Near one end of the hopper car is a Switch Stand (It is NOT on the Hopper Car). Look at the switch stand and send me the name of the manufacturer. The name of the iron works company is clearly stamped on the switch stand. DO NOT INCLUDE THIS ANSWER IN YOUR LOG. You may log the cache, then send me your answer.
2. Optional... Take a picture of the Lehigh Valley Hopper Car and post it with your log on the cache description page. Optional again if you want to be in the picture.
