Geocache Description:

If you've done my nearby Letterbox Hybrid Petersfield Heath - 10,000 years of history you may have learned that the Heath has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years but none of the early Mesolighic archeology is visible to the casual observer.

If you haven't done the Letterbox and are intending to do it I would recommend going to collect the info from the start point now as this virtual will take you close to the final for that cache.

Standing at the published co-ordinates and looking South you will see a sizeable mound with trees growning on top, this is a Bronze age  Bowl Barrow and is one of  21  Barrows of varying sizes  on The Heath  representing the burial sites of people who lived during the Early Bronze Age, around 2000-1800BC.

Some of the barrows are obvious as the ones before you, while others are more difficult to identify having been flattened or covered with trees or shrubs.

There are currently 15 bowl barrow, 4 saucer barrows,  one  disc  and one bell barrow on The Heath. Early OS maps show there were many more barrows before the modern housing around The Heath was built, making this one of the largest and most important groups of Barrows in the county.

The waypoints identify some of the existing Barrows, if you would like to explore them, but you will need to visit Barrows 5, 13 and 19 to log this cache.

*******************To claim this cache ********************

Collect the following information from the boards at these barrows

Barrow 5 (waypoint Q1, the published location) What is the diameter of the barrow?

Barrow 13 (waypoint Q2) What kind of knife was burnt with the body?

Barrow 19 (waypoint Q3) How many burials were discovered here?

Send the answers to me preferably via the message system, or an Email stating your caching name.

Then take a photo of either you, part of you, your GPS, a note with your caching name, your  dog,

hat or walking stick  in front of any of the barrows and clearly showing the barrow and upload it with your online log.

You may log the find immediately but any logs without an accompanying photo or message

may be subsequently deleted without notice.

This cache involves a walk of about 1km (round trip) over Petersfield Heath, the Heath can get very boggy in places after heavy rain so good waterproof walking boots would be a good idea if it's been raining hard recently.
