Memorial Court and Fountain
Established in 1955, Memorial Court pays tribute to Fresno State alumni who died while serving their country. The Memorial Fountain was dedicated seven years later.
Memorial Court unfolds in the trees, concrete benches and memorial plaques that line the walkways from the fountain to the rose garden. Bernie Shaw, president of the Chinese Club, conceived the court in 1954 as a memorial to "the Fresno State College veterans of all wars."
Dedication ceremonies for the Memorial Fountain were held December 7, 1962 - Pearl Harbor Day- and featured a four-gun salute. The Fresno State classes of 1957 and 1959-63 and the parents of Louise Masten Jensen, class of 1951, donated the now-iconic landmark.
The late Darwin Musselman, a well-known painter, Fresno State alumnus and art professor, designed the spectacular fountain that continuously spouts water. At night, the spray is illuminated by colorful lights within the fountain bowls.
In May 2012, the showpiece was rededicated following renovations that included the addition of planters with flower beds and cost-efficient lighting. Associated Students, Inc. helped fund the project.
