Pasadena Robinson Memorial
This virtual cache was placed on the occasion of the 105th birthday of Jackie Robinson, the American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. Robinson broke the color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. This memorial sculpture in Robinson's hometown of Pasadena honors him and his older brother Mack Robinson, who also gained athletic fame in track and field by breaking the Olympic record in the 200 meters at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and winning the silver medal, finishing just behind Jesse Owens.
These monumental bronze sculptures were dedicated on November 6, 1997 and were meant to honor the brothers' contributions both within and beyond the athletic realm. The sculptures are inscibed on the sides and backs of the heads with text and images highlighting the stories of their multifaceted lives.
The sculptures are surrounded by a commemorative Ring of Donors to recognize contributors to the memorial. To claim a find of this virtual cache, message the cache owner with the surname of the "Champion" contributors who are alphabetically LAST on the list of donors. And please feel free to share your photos and impressions of the memorial in your log.
