I chose this spot for my Virtual because this has been my favorite spot to visit for at least the last 50 years. I have come here to swim, fish, hike, camping and to watch the fish challenge the falls to make it to their spawning grounds. A lot of tourist come to these falls for all of the same reasons that I have liested and I thought that I would open it up to all of the GeoCaching Tourests. You do have to remember that as much as we love to watch or maybe catch the fish so do the wild animals. Keeping this in mind this area is very prone to Bears, Cougars as well as Wolves. If coming here with your children and pets keep an eye on your charges. The river is very fast flowing so keep that in mind, also as children can be swept away very fast. The trail/raod is easily a 1.5 terrain and if you have a good wheelchair it can be even a 1 terrain.
As for the swimming there is a very nice swimming hole downstream below the falls. The only down side of the swimming hole has a small stream feeding into it and if swiiming through the current you will find it very very cold, the rest of the pool is tolerable.
Fishing here is really good. Fishing is permitted 50 meters below the pool below the falls and 50 meters above the falls. There are a nuber of different varieties of fish you can catch here and it all depends on the time of year you are here.
If hiking is more your thing there are some nice hinking trails in and around the falls. There is also a very nice hiking trail above the camping area, the trail is called the Anglers Trail. This trail takes about 2 hours to hike from one end to the other, depending on your hiking ability. Along this trail you will see some incredible views, old growth forests and some areas along the river that are perfect for fishing at.
If Camping is your thing there is a camp site just above the falls with a good number of sites that you can bring your trailer into or to pitch your tent. There is nothing better then camping next to this river and listening to the river flowing by and the sound of the falls off in the distance.
The best reason to come here, as far as I am concerned, is to come up here when the salmon are running. There a number of view points at and below the falls to watch them jumping the falls. You can also watch them as they run the fish lader. There are metal plates in a zig zag and if you look through the grates you can watch the fish swimming up through the lader as well as resting in places along the way. I hope you enjoy your visit here as much as I have over the years.
To log this cache as a find there are a number of requirements to fullfil and you will have to fo to 2 different locations. You can get two of the requirments answered at the above coordinates and for the other two requirments you are going to have to go further down the trail, towards the falls.
1- In some locations how far will Chinook Salmon swim upstream to return to their spawning locations
2- When out in the open Ocean what will the Chinook normally feed on
3- At the fish laders how many viewing grates are there to observe the fish as they swim through the lader.
4- Take a picture of your group or a selfie of yourself to show that you actually where there.
All 4 requirments are needed to claim this as a find. You can post your picture however do not post your answers on your log instead send your answers to me. There is no need to wait for my responce to claim the find here. I your answers are incorrect I will let you know and I will delete your log.
