The Town of Flower Mound was named for this smooth rounded mound that rises 50 feet above the surrounding countryside for a total height of 650ft above sea level. It has never been plowed & is part of what was the American Blackland Tall Grass Prairie that ran from Canada to the Rio Grand. Once, there was 20 million acres of this tall grass prarie, only 1000 total acres remain, this is 12.5 acres of it. The Flower Mound is covered with big & little bluestem grasses & a large variety of native flowers. Most native flowers are small, so people who visit are sometimes surprised to not see a large garden, you may have to look closely for the abundant wild flowers. It does not contain Bluebonnets inside the fence since they are not native, there are some outside the fence along the sidewalk. The Mound is protected & managed by The Mound Foundation & is used for Easter Sunrise Services, surrounding churces take turns holding the service. During the last 2 solar eclipses, there were people at the top with telescopes & solar glasses for the public to use.
It is wonderful to have a special geographic area that the public is encouraged to use. In addition to flowers, birds and other wildlife make their home on the Mound The Flower Mound is open to the public & there are several paths leading to the top.
