Historie nápisů na zdi sahá podle pamětníků do 60. let 20. století, kdy se zde zde objevovaly vzkazy pro Jana Wericha, který bydlel nedaleko na Kampě. Od sedmdesátých let byla nazývána „Zeď nářků“. Objevovaly se na ní křídou psané básně či o spontánní sdělení bez hlubšího významu.
Po smrti Johna Lennona v prosinci 1980 kdosi využil prázdné kamenné desky, která bývala součástí veřejného vodovodu, k vytvoření symbolického náhrobku Johna Lennona. K němu lidé nosili květiny, svíčky a Lennonovy fotografie. Brzy se na blízké zdi začaly objevovat graffiti inspirované Johnem Lennonem a útržky textů písní hudební skupiny Beatles.
V dubnu 1981 byla zeď poprvé přetřena zelenou barvou, kterou zřejmě zástupci režimu vyjádřili své obavy z nespoutaných projevů svobody i v souvislosti s přípravami XVI. sjezdu KSČ. Lennonova zeď poté byla přemalována několikrát, vždy ji ale znovu zaplnily další texty a obrázky.
Každý rok v předvečer výročí úmrtí Johna Lennona se skupina mladých lidí sešla u Lennonovy zdi. Při setkáních obvykle hráli na kytaru a zpívali – někdy písně od Beatles a Lennona, často pak i české folkové písničky.
Příslušníci Veřejné bezpečnosti se pravidelně snažili účastníky rozehnat. Příchozí legitimovali, někdy i zvali na výslech či zatýkali.
Každoroční setkání Lennonových fanoušků postupně přerostla ve večerní pochody Prahou, proti kterým zasahovala policie. Tisk psal o účastnících jako o alkoholicích, duševně postižených, sociopatech a agentech západního světa; jejich aktivitu označoval za lennonismus.

Po roce 1989
Po navrácení areálu řádu maltézských rytířů se vlastník rozhodl zeď opravit. Na návrh Mírového klubu Johna Lennona pak řád nechal malíře Františka Flašara na zeď vytvořit portrét Johna Lennona. Podle původní představy se na zeď kolem portrétu měly pouze kreslit květiny, tyto představy se však nenaplnily.
Zeď se během času měnila a původní Lennonův portrét byl dlouho schován pod vrstvou nových maleb. Pokaždé, když byly malby přetřeny barvou, následující den se obnovilo mnoho veršů a obrázků květin. Po přelomu století se zeď stala turistickou atrakcí a místo navštěvují zástupy turistů. Původní idealistické nápisy začaly vytlačovat vzkazy všeho druhu. O to důležitější je připomínat si její pravý význam a zkusit se tak na Lennonovu zeď podívat z pohledu, který má svoje kořeny už v šedesátých letech.
Současnost
K několikáté a zároveň poslední úplné přemalbě zdi došlo v květnu roku 2022, kdy zde vytvořilo novou podobu Lennonovy zdi celkem 29 umělců z celé Evropy. Kromě tradičního vyobrazení Johna Lennona bylo v centrální části zdi umístěno velké kruhové zrcadlo s dalším portrétem zpěváka, v němž se odrážejí okolní domy i obrazy lidí stojících před zdí.
Mnozí Češi si Lennonovu zeď dodnes pojí se svobodou projevu, vzdorem proti totalitě i odkazem Johna Lennona. Navzdory tomu, že místní se jí kvůli davům turistů spíše vyhýbají, 8. prosince se tu každoročně sejde mnoho lidí, kteří u pomníčku zanechají svíčku nebo s kytarou do noci hrají písně Beatles a Lennona. Jde o vzpomínku na normalizaci a mládežnický vzdor proti ní, ke kterým se dnes přidává oslava svobody, lásky a demokracie.

The John Lennon Wall, a colorful wall full of street art, is considered a symbol of peace, love, and freedom. It is one of the popular sights of Prague and has a rich history.
History
The John Lennon Wall is located in a small and secluded square across from the French Embassy. Since 1960s the wall had been decorated by love poems and short messages against the regime. At that time, the wall was known as the Wailing Wall. After the murder of John Lennon in December 1980, unknown people painted the singer's portrait and quotes from his songs on the wall at night. Lennon was considered a hero of the Czech youth in Prague with his political protest songs with themes of freedom and, like Western music in general, was a thorn in the side of the communist regime.
What began as a place of mourning gradually evolved into a silent protest against the communist government and a call for more freedom. More and more song lyrics and pictures of the Beatles were immortalized on the wall. In order to stop the government-critical and freedom-demanding thought, the communist regime had the wall completely painted over several times. But the wall was always covered again with new graffiti and inscriptions. In 1988, there were even clashes with security police and arrests when students wrote expressions of displeasure with the government on the wall. The liberalization movement these students followed was described as Lennonism (not to be confused with Leninism), and Czech authorities described participants variously as alcoholic, mentally deranged, sociopathic, and agents of Western free market capitalism.

Present
The end of the confrontation was the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and since then John Lennon Wall has been considered as a symbol of global ideals such as love and peace. The wall continuously undergoes change, and the original portrait of Lennon is long lost under layers of new paint.
The wall was completely repainted last time in May 2022, when a total of 29 artists from all over Europe created a new look for the Lennon Wall. In addition to the traditional depiction of John Lennon, a large circular mirror with another portrait of the singer was placed in the central part of the wall, reflecting the surrounding houses and images of people standing in front of the wall.

Die John Lennon Mauer ist eine bunte Wand voller Street Art. Sie liegt gegenüber der französischen Botschaft in der Nähe der Karlsbrücke. Was wirkt wie eine normale urbane Graffitifläche hat eine ganz eigene Geschichte und trägt den Namen von John Lennon, der übrigens Zeit seines Lebens nie in Prag war.
Geschichte
In den 1970er Jahren erschienen dort Nachrichten für den prominenten Schauspieler Jan Werich, der unweit davon wohnte und dem es von den Kommunisten verboten wurde zu arbeiten. Der entscheidende Moment kam im Dezember 1980, als die Mauer zu einem symbolischen Grabstein für den ermordeten John Lennon wurde. Der Todestag Lennons, der 8. Dezember, wurde zum Tag inoffizieller Begegnungen, die sich immer mehr zu Protesten gegen das Regime verwandelten. Politische Repressionen, gewalttätige polizeiliche Unterdrückungen der Demonstrationen und Überstreichen mit grüner Farbe halfen nichts. Botschaften über Frieden, Liebe und Freiheit erschienen immer wieder und dieser Ort gewann allmählich an inoffizieller Berühmtheit.
Die Bewegung dieser Studenten wurde in der Folge als Lennonismus bezeichnet. Die Regierung sprach von Alkoholikern, Geisteskranken, Soziopathen und westlichen Agenten.

Ausschmückung
Die John Lennon Mauer ist nicht nur ein Denkmal für den Ex-Beatle, seine Haltung und seine Friedensbotschaften. Es ist vielmehr ein Mahnmal der freien Meinungsäußerung und der friedlichen Rebellion der tschechischen Jugend gegen das damalige Regime. Den Kampf um die Sauberkeit der Mauer hat die kommunistische Polizei verloren. Das ursprüngliche Porträt ist heute vergraben unter unzähligen Schichten Farbe, aber noch heute finden sich an der John Lennon Mauer immer wieder Beatles- und Lennon-Zitate. Man muss nur aufmerksam genug danach suchen.
