MERCADO CENTRAL DE VALENCIA

El Mercado Central de Valencia se encuentra ubicado en el antiguo emplazamiento habitual de los mercados ambulantes de la ciudad. Ya en el año 1839 se inaugura, en esta ubicación, un mercado descubierto conocido como el Mercado Nuevo y que sería el germen del actual Mercado Central. Hacia finales del siglo XIX este mercado es claramente insuficiente para la población de Valencia, motivo por el cual la ciudad emprende la construcción de lo que es hoy su mercado principal.

Así, en el año 1914 y bajo el diseño modernista de Francesc Guàrdia y Alexandre Soler, comienza la construcción de este emblemático edificio, correspondiendo la dirección de obras a los arquitectos valencianos Enrique Viedma y Ángel Romaní. Las obras terminaron en enero de 1928, si bien el mercado no se inauguró hasta noviembre de ese mismo año.

La espectacularidad del Mercado Central es innegable. Se trata de una de las edificaciones más atractivas y visitadas de la ciudad de Valencia. Su arquitectura no rompe la estética de la plaza, donde se integra a la perfección con otros dos importantes monumentos: la Lonja de la Seda y la Iglesia de los Santos Juanes. Es, indudablemente, el edificio más representativo de la Valencia que a principios del siglo XX avanza hacia el progreso tecnológico y mercantil y se siente orgullosa del potencial agrícola de su huerta. Esta apuesta por el progreso y por la producción agrícola se reflejan en de la estructura modernista del mercado y de la ornamentación alegórica que observamos en su interior.

Las cúpulas, de hierro, cristal y cerámica (la central alcanza 30 metros de altura) y las veletas que las coronan - la de la cotorra y la del pez - se integran a una panorámica paisajística de torreones y campanarios eminentemente valenciana.

La distribución del interior es racionalista, de manera que los puestos se sitúan a lo largo de una serie de calles rectilíneas atravesadas por dos anchas vías. Se concibió para 959 puestos, destinados en la zona general a tiendas altas cerradas para carnicería, tocinería y ultramarinos; tiendas bajas para venta de patatas, legumbres, verduras, frutas y gallina; tiendas altas abiertas para venta de pan, volatería, carne y caza; y, en la pescadería, tiendas altas para venta de salazones y despojos, y tiendas bajas para pescado.

Los dos pabellones que flanquean el acceso principal están construidos enteramente en ladrillo visto, con aplicaciones de piedra y de cerámica decorada; mientras que el cuerpo anexionado de Tenencia de Alcaldía sigue la construcción de influencia novecentista y queda rematado por torretas coronadas por pequeñas cúpulas semiesféricas.

Simplemente debes adjuntar a tu registro una foto en la puerta principal del mercado (lugar de publicación del caché) que acredite tu visita. No es necesario que aparezcas en la foto. Con un papel en donde salga tu nick o algo que te caracterice es suficiente. Cualquier registro que no cumpla este requisito será borrado sin previo aviso.

No es necesario acceder al mercado para registrar el caché, si bien es más que recomendable su visita. Si decides hacerlo, ten en cuenta que el horario es de lunes a sábado de 7.30 a 15.00 horas.

CENTRAL MARKET OF VALENCIA

The Central Market of Valencia is located in the old usual location of the city's street markets. Already in 1839, an open market known as the New Market was inaugurated in this location, which would be the seed of the current Central Market. Towards the end of the 19th century, this market was clearly insufficient for the population of Valencia, which is why the city undertook the construction of what is today its main market.

Thus, in 1914 and under the modernist design of Francesc Guàrdia and Alexandre Soler, the construction of this emblematic building began, with the direction of the works being carried out by the Valencian architects Enrique Viedma and Ángel Romaní. The works finished in January 1928, although the market did not open until November of that same year.

The spectacular nature of the Central Market is undeniable. It is one of the most attractive and visited buildings in the city of Valencia. Its architecture does not break the aesthetics of the square, where it integrates perfectly with two other important monuments: the Lonja de la Seda and the Church of Santos Juanes. It is, undoubtedly, the most representative building of Valencia, which at the beginning of the 20th century moved towards technological and commercial progress and was proud of the agricultural potential of its farms. This commitment to progress and agricultural production is reflected in the modernist structure of the market and the allegorical ornamentation that we see inside.

The domes, made of iron, glass and ceramic (the central one reaches 30 meters high) and the weather vanes that crown them - the one with the parrot and the one with the fish - are integrated into an eminently Valencian landscape panorama of towers and bell towers.

The interior layout is rationalist, so that the stalls are located along a series of rectilinear streets crossed by two wide roads. It was designed for 959 positions, intended in the general area for closed high-rise shops for butchers, bacon and groceries; low shops selling potatoes, legumes, vegetables, fruits and chicken; tall shops open for the sale of bread, poultry, meat and bushmeat; and, in the fishmonger, tall shops for selling salted fish and offal, and low shops for fish.

The two pavilions that flank the main entrance are built entirely in exposed brick, with stone and decorated ceramic applications; while the annexed body of the Mayor's Office follows the construction of Noucentista influence and is topped by turrets crowned by small hemispherical domes.

TO REGISTER THE VIRTUAL CACHE

You simply must attach to your registration a photo at the main door of the market (cache publication location) that proves your visit. You don't have to appear in the photo. A piece of paper with your nickname or something that characterizes you is enough. Any log that does not meet this requirement will be deleted without prior notice.

It is not necessary to access the market to register the cache, although a visit is very recommended. If you decide to do it, keep in mind that the Central Market is opened Monday to Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
