Walther von der Vogelweide
Über das Leben des Herrn Walther weiß man wenig. Sein Geburtsort ist unbekannt. Er soll um 1170 geboren und um 1230 gestorben sein und ist sehr wahrscheinlich in Würzburg begraben. Aus seinen Werken lässt sich einiges schließen, aber nicht belegen.
Er gilt als bedeutendster deutscher Dichter des Mittelalters. Seine Werke sind in Mittelhochdeutsch verfasst und in verschiedenen Handschriften überliefert, zum Beispiel in der Großen Heidelberger Liederhandschrift, in der Kleinen Heidelberger Liederhandschrift, in der Weingartner Liederhandschrift oder in der Würzburger Liederhandschrift des Würzburger Historikers Michael de Leone. Dieser schreibt dort über 100 Jahre nach dem Tod des Minnesängers auch, Walther sei im Grashof hinter dem Neumünster begraben. An anderer Stelle berichtet er von einem Epitaph mit lateinischer Inschrift für den 'im Kreuzgang des Neuen Münsters von Würzburg begrabenen' Minnesänger.
Das mutmaßliche Grab wurde längst zerstört. Heute steht im Lusamgärtlein ein Gedenkstein für Walther von der Vogelweide, der in seinen vier Ecken Mulden für Wasser und Futter für die Vögel hat, wie es sich angeblich der Dichter wünschte. Der Garten ist ein versteckter, schattiger Ort der Ruhe, nur manchmal gefüllt mit Touristen auf Stadtführung. Auf dem Gedenkstein findet man auch immer Blumen, die Verliebte hier niederlegen.
Würzburg hat Walther neben dem Grabstein im Lusamgärtlein auch noch eine figürliche Darstellung auf dem Frankoniabrunnen gewidmet. Die Haltung des Dichters dort geht auf sein bekanntestes Werk zurück:

und dahte bein mit beine:
dar ûf satzt ich den ellenbogen:
ich hete in mîne hant gesmogen
daz kinne und ein mîn wange.
Diese Haltung ist auch in obigem Bild aus dem Codex Manesse zu sehen, ebenso in der Weingartner Liederhandschrift oder bei der Statue in Duchcov.
