O Jardim Municipal do Funchal, também conhecido por Jardim Dona Amélia, em memória da rainha de Portugal, localiza-se no coração da cidade do Funchal, na Madeira e possui uma área aproximada de 8 300 m⊃2;.
The Jardim Municipal do Funchal, also known as Jardim Dona Amélia in memory of the queen of Portugal, is located in the heart of the city of Funchal, Madeira and has an area of approximately 8,300 m⊃2;.
Durante vários séculos, neste espaço, situava-se o Convento de São Francisco, tendo sido preservado numa das alamedas do jardim um brasão, em mármore, do século XVII com as armas dos Franciscanos portugueses.
The Convent of St Francis was located here for several centuries and a 17th-century marble coat of arms bearing the arms of the Franciscans and Portugal has been preserved in one of the garden's avenues.
A construção do jardim teve início em Agosto de 1880, sendo que as primeiras plantas foram trazidas de Paris e do Porto.
O jardim alberga uma grande fitodiversidade, com plantas dos vários cantos do mundo, como a árvore-das-salsichas originária da África Tropical, a garcínia ou mangostão da Índia, Bangladesh e Malásia, a planta-dos-dentes do México e o pândano de Madagáscar etc. As plantas da flora da Madeira também estão representadas, existindo barbusanos , dragoeiros , pau-branco e tis.
As flores não podiam faltar neste recanto, não fosse a Ilha da Madeira a Ilha das flores. Diversas espécies dão um colorido muito especial a este jardim.
Este espaço verde dispõe igualmente de um bar-esplanada, um quiosque e uma pequena lagoa povoada por cisnes e patos, com repuxos e com uma escultura em mármore, vulgarmente conhecido por “Meninos”e ainda um auditório e anfiteatro onde se realizam diversas actividades lúdico-culturais ao longo de todo o ano..
Construction of the garden began in August 1880 and the first plants were brought from Paris and Porto.
The garden is home to a great diversity of plants from all over the world, such as the sausage tree from tropical Africa, the garcinia or mangosteen from India, Bangladesh and Malaysia, the tooth plant from Mexico and the pandanus from Madagascar, etc. Plants from Madeira's flora are also represented, with barbusanos, dragoeiros, pau-branco and tis.
Flowers could not be missing in this nook and cranny, were it not for Madeira Island being the Island of Flowers. Various species give this garden a very special colour.
This green space also has a bar-esplanade, a kiosk and a small pond populated by swans and ducks, with fountains and a marble sculpture, commonly known as "Meninos", as well as an auditorium and amphitheatre where various recreational and cultural activities are held throughout the year.
