Possibly the oldest ice cream parlor in the nation! Or at least on this side of the Mississippi! Or in Iowa? At any rate – this location started serving ice cream in 1910.
That year Gus Nopoulos opened the business, serving candy and ice cream through the two World Wars and the Great Depression, before leaving the store to his son in 1946. George “The Candy Man” Nopoulos and his wife Thelma operated the ice cream parlor for the next 60 years before selling the business to Lynn and Brenda Ochiltree in 2015.
We hope this place survives at least another 100 years!
Cache is available any time, but if you stop by between 10am and 7pm (October 1st through March 31st hours are 10am to 5pm) you can visit the Wilton (and Moscow) memorabilia museum at the back of the store.
The building is said to date back to 1856 – barely a year after Wilton was platted, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
To claim credit for this find: look for a plaque just to the right of the front windows. Message us the first and last years of the American Legion Post at this location. You are welcome to log before sending the message.
