The name lavender is used for around 47 species of plant in the mint family, belonging to the genus Lavandula. They are extensively cultivated as ornamental plants, for culinary use and as a source of essential oils, with lavender commonly used in cosmetics and to odourise household products. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the more commonly cultivated species, both for cosmetics and as an aromatic in cooking. However, allergies to lavender oil are not unknown.
