"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
There are over three hundred species of rose, all in the genus Rosa, and tens of thousands of cultivars. They are one of the most popular plants, both in the garden and in culture, being the symbol of (among many other things) the godess Aphrodite, the Virgin Mary, the English royal Houses of York (white), Lancaster (red) and Tudor (white over red), countries including England, Slovakia and the United States, and of course romance.
As well as garden and cut flowers, roses are used in cosmetics, perfumery and in food. Among other things, the petals are edible and are often candied or used to create rose syrup, while the fruits (rose hips) are used in teas and jam. The hips are one of the best known sources of Vitamin C.
Of course, geocachers frequently encounter roses in the wild, usually through a thorn (technically a prickle) in the hand while feeling behind a tree.
