Geocache Description:

Geology at Nijagara Falls and river Cijevna

Nijagara Falls is the little brother of the big waterfalls between Canada and the US. It's a really nice place for photographs and not far from the capital Podgorica. In summer you can even take a swim.

But this Earthcache does not have anything to do with the falls themselves. It covers the geology surrounding it. There are some interesting things to find, so have fun finding answers to the questions.

When standing the coordinates you see layers of karst rock right in front of you.

Karst

Karst is a type of landscape or terrain that is characterized by the dissolution of soluble rocks, such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. This geological process, known as karstification, occurs over long periods of time through the chemical weathering of these soluble rocks by natural acids in water. These landscapes are often visually striking and play a significant role in hydrology, as the dissolution of rocks can lead to the rapid drainage of surface water into underground systems.

Minerals in Karst

The mineral composition of karst rock can vary depending on the type of rock that undergoes karstification processes. The most common type of rock associated with karst landscapes is limestone, though dolomite and gypsum can also play a role.

Limestone can be found in various colors, including white, gray, beige, tan, brown, and even black. The color is typically influenced by impurities and the presence of other minerals. Limestone can have a range of textures, from fine-grained to coarse-grained. The texture is influenced by the size of the mineral grains that make up the rock.

Dolomite crystals can exhibit a range of colors, including colorless, white, pink, gray, brown, green, or rarely, black. The color is typically influenced by the presence of impurities or other minerals. It commonly occurs in diamond-shaped crystals. These crystals can be well-formed and exhibit smooth surfaces.

Gypsum crystals can be colorless, white, gray, brown, beige, or even shades of pink or green. The color is influenced by impurities present in the mineral. Its crystals are often transparent to translucent, allowing light to pass through. The most recognizable crystal form of gypsum is the tabular or flat, six-sided prism.

Logging this Earthcache

To log this Earthcache, please solve the following tasks and send them to me (Email or Messagecenter).

Go down the stairs and examine the rocks around the falls.

1. Describe the color and texture of the rocks.
2. How does the river's flow influence the dissolution and erosion of the karst rock?
3. What do you think is the mineral composition of the karst rock, and how does it contribute to its dissolution in karst processes?
4. Estimate, how wide the whole canyon is.
5. Optional but greatly appreciated: Take a photo of yourself in front of the falls and post with your log.

You can log immediately. You don't have to wait for an answer. Please send the answers in English or German.

Siđite niz stepenice i pregledajte stene oko vodopada.

1. Opišite boju i teksturu stena.
2. Kako tok reke utiče na otapanje i eroziju kraške stene?

Have fun with the cache!
