Geocache Description:

In the historic centre of the village, at the entrance to the grounds of St Wilfrid’s Church, stands the village war memorial.

The memorial was first dedicated in 1921, and commemorates the nine men of the village who were killed in the first world war, also listing a further 63 parishioners (men and women) who served in the war. The design incorporates a sculpture of two soldiers with a Vickers machine gun in Italian marble, standing on a Derbyshire gritstone plinth. It is said (but it has not been possible to confirm this) that this is the only war memorial in the country with a carving of Vickers machine gun. Another frequent comment is that the soldiers seem to be aiming at the church tower!

The memorial was added to after the second world war to include additional names.

Next to the main monument, there is a separate memorial from the Mapperley Colliery. Originally displayed in the colliery offices, it was later moved to the miners’ social club and when that was demolished it was rescued and placed here. The cache owner’s great-uncle is listed on here.

Caches should never be placed within the precincts of a war memorial. This cache is a few minutes walk away.

To work out where to go, you need to have a look at the bench which is sited opposite the memorial, next to the Village Hall railings. On the bench is a plaque commemorating a local man. He was born on A-B-CD, and died on EF-G-HJ.

The cache can be found at N52 57.(A)(B)(E) W1 21.(F-E-H)(C+H)(J-H)
