Confusingly, the amaryllis bulbs sold as Christmas gifts are generally cultivars and hybrids of species in the genus Hippeastrum, which come from Central and South America, rather than the southern African Amaryllis genus. Most Hippeastrum species have large, fleshy bulbs, long narrow leaves and large funnel shaped flowers on a spike. Cultivated varieties are usually unscented and are hybrids of different species, giving a variety of colours and appearance. Usually they are described by the country where the cultivar was developed.
