Geocache Description:

This cache trail was placed to help us celebrate Leap Year geocaching style.    Please cache responsibly!

  • Start your hike from the Parking Coords and hike to the Posted Coords.  At the Posted Coords, you will find a small brown and white sign.  Use the information on that sign to determine the final coords for this cache using the formula below.  Please note that the final for this cache is a significant driving distance from the first stage.
  • Formula - N30 37.AAA  W97 08.BBB
    • Count the number of letters on the sign – This is X
    • There is a number on the sign – This is Y
    • To calculate AAA: Take X and multiply it by 35 and then add 5
    • To calculate BBB: Take Y and multiply it by 5 and then subtract 31.
    • If AAA and/or BBB is less than 100, add leading zeroes to your result.  For example, if AAA=9, then make AAA=009.  As another example, if BBB = 42, make BBB=042

HISTORY LESSON:  In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII created the Gregorian calendar that we use today by adding February 29 during a Leap Year.    Adding Leap Years ensures a more accurate alignment with the Earth's orbit.   A Leap Year occurs every four years, with exceptions for years divisible by 100 but not by 400.  Yes, that means that we will not have a Leap Year in 2100, the 100th anniversary year of Geocaching.

Interestingly, the term Leap Day actually refers to the fact that under the normal 365 day calendar year, each date advances one weekday every year (say from Tuesday to Wednesday).  But during Leap Year, each calendar date advances by two weekdays (say from Tuesday to Thursday).  So in this example, the date Leaps Wednesday during Leap Year - It Leaps a Day.

WARNING:  Take the DT ratings on these caches seriously, they take a Village to find.  Come prepared with a wide assortment of TTOTs and consider caching with friends.  Have fun out here, but know your limits and be safe!
