History:
Nampa got it’s start, as people traveling on the Short Line Railroad began to settle around the 1st railroad stop in the Treasure Valley. Prior to being incorporated in 1891, Nampa was called New Jerusalem by the settlers, due to their deep Christian roots. After being incorportated the political figureheads met in many different privatetly owned locations before the original City Hall opened its doors in 1910, right under your feet!
The old City Hall was a 2-story cream colored brick building with stairs leading to the entry. The old City Hall’s Council Chamber was occupied by City Council until 1980 when the Council Chamber was evacuated, and meeting were held in the courtroom of the nearby county building. Evacuation of the old City Hall Council Chambers was ordered by a district court order due to a handicapped citizen’s complaint that they couldn’t attend meetings because the stairs denied access to the meetings. In 1982, the current City Hall opened its doors and council meetings were able to move from the cramped courtroom.
After completion of the new building the old City Hall building was sold to a developer who had intended on restoring the building, but 9 year later in 1991, though the original City Hall building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was torn down. More
The Nampa Library opened its new doors in 2015 and moved from it’s previous location inside the (still existing) First National Bank building, on the corner of 1st St. S. and 11th Ave. S.
