Cardeto Park is one of those places that stays in the heart. Always, when I come here I find peace and serenity. It is one of the many pearls of the city of Ancona. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Enjoy!
The name comes from the thistle plant that once grew abundantly throughout the area. The seeds of this plant provide nourishment for the goldfinch, which in fact was common throughout the park. The very image chosen as the park's emblem depicts a goldfinch. Today, unfortunately, both thistles and goldfinches are really rare within the park.
The vegetation of these 35 hectares of land consists largely of wild scrub of broom, alaterni, hawthorn, honeysuckle, dogwood, and cypress trees. On the ancient walls and south-facing walls of the buildings grow plants of wallflowers, capers, and snapdragons, with showy blooms.
In the park there are areas rich in history :
- Campo degli Ebrei: one of the largest and oldest Israelites cemeteries in Europe, the "Campo degli ebrei," which is close to the sea, was active from the 1400s (the first documents regarding the use of this place as a cemetery area for Ancona's thriving Jewish community date from 1428)
- Campo degli Inglesi or "Cemetery of the English": reserved for Protestants, members of the various Protestant denominations present in the city, and not just the English were buried here. It is located on Capuchin Hill, inside the 16th-century bastion of St. Paul's. Today two rectangular stone headstones remain in the Protestant cemetery, decorated with symbols and crosses
- St. Paul's Bastion: built in the 1500s, there is a network of dungeons characterized by large rooms with architectural elements of great historical interest: casemates, listening corridors, vents, loopholes, thrones, posterule
- Old Lighthouse: commissioned in 1860 by Pope Pius IX and of 19th-century origin, it stands at the top of the Capuchin Hill. After the two world wars and due to earthquakes and the crumbling of the ground, the lighthouse suffered a lot of damage over time, in 1965 the new lighthouse was built, a few dozen meters
- Castelfidardo powder magazine: named Castelfidardo in memory of the Risorgimento battle of Castelfidardo, it was designed by architect Giuseppe Morando and was built to support the military settlement of the nearby Villarey Barracks. Its current use is as a theater/multipurpose space
- Fort Cardeto: was built on the initiative of the French in 1799 who had wrested the city from the Church State. It is rather protected by its conformation since a long moat keeps most of its escarpments hidden. It was connected with the right bastion to the Third Line Belt and was armed with 8 cannons, had no powder magazine of its own because it used the "Castelfidardo" powder magazine located not far away, with a capacity of about 200,000 kg of powder. It was connected to the Campo Trincerato after the Unification of Italy, with the new city wall, which opened in the Cavour gate, at the square of the same name
- Capuchin Fort: the top of Capuchin Hill was transformed into a fortress, taking advantage of the pre-existing sixteenth-century city walls and fortifying the terraces located between the hill and the town, so an effective rearguard was obtained concerning Cardeto
- former Villarey Barracks: built between 1865 and 1867, it could house more than 1,200 soldiers. Now home to the Faculty of Economics and Business of the Marche Polytechnic University
In the cache you will find logbook and pencil, two micro machines, a compass, some sand from the desert, a pendant from Burma, a survival kit, and for the FTF a beautiful silver coin. Put everything back and enjoy the park!
