Kings County Municipal government used to be housed in, what is now, the Nova Scotia Court Building in Kenville. A new complex was built and opened in 2019 on Coldbrook Village Drive, in Coldbrook.
This new building of 24,000 sqft is 30% more energy efficient "This was achieved by including features such as ground source heat pumps, high performance glazing which reduces the amount of energy required to heat and cool the building, an enhanced building envelope and a highly efficient heat recovery system. The design also incorporated LED lighting and occupancy sensors to reduce electricity consumption. The building’s orientation maximizes exposure to the south, while fewer windows and more insulation on the north, east and west walls reduce overall energy consumption." On the roof of the complex is an array of solar panels which features 240 photovoltaic (PV) panels and three inverters,
The solar energy harnessed by the PV panels will be fed into the building’s electrical system and sold to NSP for $0.22 per kWh through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement. Performance forecasts estimate that the 72 kW PV system will start off generating up to 130,000 kWh per year – enough electricity to account for approximately 50% of the energy consumed by the Administration Building in the last year.
