Calling all astronauts, are you ready to embark on a new mission that is sure to be out of this world? Intergalactic caches have been spotted through the Mountaineer region and beyond and we need your help tracking them down in the Cosmic Caching Challenge! Each cache will contain a special code word on the container or on the log.
On March 2, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. a kickoff event will be held to celebrate the launch of our intergalactic adventure.
- Cachers will then venture out into the universe to find caches and record as many unique code words as possible to find a special bonus cache to be published at the MAC Spring Fling.
October Sky is a movie based on the lives of four young men who grew up in Coalwood, West Virginia. The movie was primarily filmed in rural East Tennessee.
October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys the title of the 1998 memoir upon which the film is based. It is also used in a period radio broadcast describing Sputnik 1 as it crossed the "October Sky". Homer Hickam said that "Universal Studios marketing people got involved and they just had to change the title because, according to their research, women over thirty would never see a movie titled Rocket Boys."[The book was later re-released with the name in order to capitalize on interest in the film.
