Stanley Colliery, always known locally as Nibby Pit, as the owners kept nibbling away at the miners’ wages, was a major employer in the area. Sunk in 1903, at its peak in the 1940s, almost 600 men worked here.
But, as with all the coal mines in the area, it gradually became unprofitable and was closed in 1961. The slag heaps have been removed, but there are still quite a few of the old pit buildings surviving. There is a structure in the trees at this location, but a little further down the hill there are various pit outbuildings which are still used as workshops, etc. And up the hill towards West Hallam, is the canoe manufacturer – and their building, which you have probably parked opposite, was the pit baths, erected in 1953.
No need to go exploring for this one though – the cache is just off the footpath.
