Frazer climbs a tree
John Frazer was born in Dromore, County Down, and migrated to New South Wales in 1842. He initially worked as a squatter and later opened a wholesale grocery business in Sydney in 1847. He married Elizabeth Ewan in 1853 and had four children. Frazer expanded his business, taking his brother-in-law James Ewan into partnership in 1859. He ventured into land speculation in the 1860s and invested in the Fitzroy Iron Works at Mittagong.
After retiring from his business in 1869, Frazer focused on real estate development in Sydney. He was involved in various public companies and served as a director until his death. He was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1874. Frazer supported education and donated funds to the University of Sydney.
He spent the last years of his life at Ranelagh, a mansion in Darling Point Road, and built a country retreat in Springwood. Frazer and his family were interred in a sandstone mausoleum in Rookwood Cemetery. His family donated funds to establish the John Frazer Scholarship in history at the University of Sydney.
Before his death, Frazer offered two sandstone drinking fountains to the City of Sydney. One is in Hyde Park South, and the other is at the intersection of St Mary's Road and Art Gallery Road. He also bequeathed land and funds for the construction of the Frazer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Springwood.
