Agia Paraskevi Chapel
The chapel of Agia Paraskevi is located outside the settlement of Kalentziou, on the ring road that connects the community with the Grammar School. Administratively, it belongs to the Municipality of Marathon. The characteristics of this nice chapel are clearly post-Byzantine.
The church is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi; a particularly popular Saint to the Greeks, who celebrates it on July, at the height of summer. Paraskevi, the only daughter of a noble Roman bourgeois family, was martyred at a very young age, after a series of brutal tortures. The devotion of the faithful distinguishes her as the protector of eye health, due to a series of related miraculous operations.
The dense vegetation and especially the century-old plane trees testify to the existence of springs, which make the environment seem literally idyllic.
With the love of the residents and especially with the efforts of the local cultural association, the monument has been preserved and above all, a well-organized surrounding space has been created, dominated by the adjacent stone amphitheater. It hosts related events, of which the annual festival of Agia Paraskevi, on July 26, stands out.
In recent years, mainly because of the natural beauty of the place, the beauty of the chapel, and the ideally designed environment, the place has become a pole of attraction for the performance of many mysteries.
