Geocache Description:

This is a sweet spot! My favorite place to soak when I dont want to put the effort into hiking >.< If you have time, please.

A little history of the area in which I love dearly.

Jemez Springs has a history with human presence dating back as far as 2,500 BC where archaeological findings were uncovered at the Jemez Cave near Soda Dam. Migrating groups eventually formed pueblos, which are believed to have been inhabited by as many as 30,000 people at one point. Spanish missionaries arrived around 1541 and established missions in the area, San Jose de Guisewa was one of them that that still stands today as historic remains. Originally built in 1621, rhe now stone ruins have a 1,400 foot interpretive trail winding through them near The Walatowa Visitor Center just eight miles south of Jemez Springs.

Jemez Springs became a hot spot for tourists in the 1800’s because of its natural mineral hot springs. There is an old legend, that in the late 1800’s, one of the hot springs erupted into a geyser. When locals realized the commercial opportunities, the water was encased as a pond with a rock wall around and a gazebo that still stands today at the Plaza. (Theres a sneaky Geocache here as well!) Amazing remenants of the original bathhouse, which closed permanently after a massive flood in 1941are visible from this cache. But please do not disturb them and respect the property.

Cache Placed with Permission from our wonderful friend "B" who manages the property.
