Well, I remember it as though it were a meal ago...
Actually I don't remember much about this K-Mart location. I grew up on the east end of town so only rarely made it "all the way out" to the Aboite area when this K-Mart was open.
Once when I worked at K-Mart East I had to pick something up for my store from this location. That's what happens when you have a giant Oldsmobile Tornado and are willing to travel for twenty-five cents a mile. And that's about it for factual tidbits, except that this container started as a camoflauge where I wanted to ends to blend in with the surroundings. It didn't work out.
Now it's time for the land of make-believe:
You may notice the "No 4X4" signs beyond the cache. That's because years ago some kids built their own 4X4 track in these woods. It had ramps and bumps and dips and ally-oops and all those things to make riding a 4X fun. The highlight was one particular big jump where you passed between some tree branches while in the air, landing blind on a smaller mound of dirt on the other side. It was amazing... ahem, or so I'm told.
Except...
According to the legend, sometimes a kid would make this big jump and literally disappear through the trees, never to be seen again. Eventually some parents got together and put up the signs to try and prevent any more kids from leaping into the unknown.
