On the way to the shore (places like Seaside Heights, LBI, or Point Pleasant), a familiar change in the landscape signals I’ve reached central Jersey: pine trees crowding the Garden State Parkway. This marks the edge of the Pinelands, a vast stretch of sandy soil and scrubby forest that defines much of South Jersey. Although this cache sits just outside the official boundary of the Pinelands National Reserve, it still offers a first glimpse into the distinctive landscape of the Pine Barrens.
