For the first time, the Lake Metroparks Geotrail has a theme: Biomimicry!
Living organisms have developed innumerable adaptations, behaviors, and features that allow them to survive in their surrounding environment. Everything from tiny bacteria to giant blue whales, has unique adaptations that can be studied and understood to expand our knowledge of our ecosystems and planet. Some adaptations are so well designed that they can be recreated through scientific and engineering processes to help improve our way of life, technology, and even give back to our natural world. This developmental process is called biomimicry. By observing our amazing variety of plants, wildlife and everything in between, we can improve our everyday life. Whether it’s something as simple as velcro on clothing, or as complex as airplane wings, many inventions were inspired by nature. This year's Geo Trail will demonstrate some examples of biomimicry, with each geocache presenting an example.
