South Annsmuir Woods
A favourite dog walk of ours in a section of the Edensmuir Forest in Central Fife. South Annsmuir Wood is an area of woodland located in the northeast of Ladybank. Extending to 55.6 ha (137 acres), it mostly comprises Scots pine together with an avenue of old Beech trees, suggesting drives or hedging in former times. The woodland is noted for its red squirrels, while bird-life includes Great spotted and Green woodpeckers.
Various remains exist from WW2, when a POW camp existed alongside the Golf course. The railwayline was protected by concrete tank traps alongside the tracks (still present) and a machine gun post (still visible across the railway tracks).
The forest can be accessed from various points, most conveniently from the level crossing in Golf Street, Ladybank or for a longer walk, from the small carpark at N 56.29, W -3.12.
