Schoemansdrift Bridge is a single-lane bridge over the Vaal River between the North West Province and the Free State in the Vredefort area. The bridge spills over from time to time and is a popular tourist attraction.

The Vaal River is the largest branch river of the Orange River in South Africa. The Vaal River gets its name from the grey colour of its water, especially in the flood season when a lot of silt and sediment are discharged.

North West (Tswana: Bokone-Bophirima) is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The capital is Mahikeng (until recently was called Mafikeng and still in common use). North West was formed in 1994 by the merger of the old Western Transvaal and the "homeland" Bophuthatswana (excluding the part that was located in the Free State) and a northeastern part of the old Cape Province.

The provincial capital Mahikeng forms a unit with Mmabatho, which was previously the capital of Bophuthatswana.

The Vredefort Dome is the largest impact crater on Earth. It is located in the Free State, South Africa, with the town of Vredefort lying in the crater. In 2005, the Vredefort Dome was added to Unesco's list of World Heritage Sites for aesthetic and scientific value of the area.
